HOW IT WORKS
Our grapevines produce fruit once per year, which we pick when they’re lovely and ripe – usually during February (whites & rosé) and March (reds). We are in Mother Nature’s hands at this point so we’re only given a few days’ notice to get a crew together to join us for harvest and help us pick grapes. This is usually made up of family, friends, our vinestay guests, cellar door visitors, neighbours, tourists, locals with a few hours to spare, and those looking to get better acquainted with the world of viticulture and wine. The more people we can recruit, the easier it will be, the faster we’ll finish, the fresher the fruit will be and the better the wine… so the more the merrier!
WHAT’S INVOLVED
We’re usually up bright and early to pick so that we beat the heat and the grapes are delivered to the winery in the best shape possible. Thankfully we’re not growing something as labour-intensive as watermelons to pick, so the process of picking is actually fairly relaxing and suitable for all fitness levels. We’re usually done and dusted picking each varietal within a few hours which is great but this depends a little on the conditions and number of pickers we have. To celebrate, we’ll head over to the cellar door and sit down together for breakfast and a glass of vino if you’ve worked up a thirst for it. If you make it to the finish line then we’ll also send you home with a bottle of vino as a souvenir and show of gratitude for your help.
